Tetem 2Situated at the Stroinksbleek is the buildings complex (currently registered as a monument) of the former blanket factory founded in 1915 as the N.V. Twentsche Textile Company Tetem. Under the leadership of the first director Julius H. Roozendaal, the factory evolved into an export company with the flannel blanket as its main product. In the thirties the Tetem factory made a change from the production of blankets to manufacturing wool, curtains and furniture fabrics. In 1969, during the major crisis in the Twents textile industry, the factory faced closure. Tetem is now a reminder of the rich textile industry and, like many other industrial buildings in Roombeek, it now serves a new function. In anticipation of its final destination, the Tetem 2 building has been used as a Free Space location from the year 2007. From March 2008 it also offers a temporary exhibition space for Medialab Enschede, a new and innovative platform for media art and other cultural activities.

StroinksbleekThe new Free Spaces location, the Stroinksbleek, will officially open on Saturday 30 May 2009 during the famous Balenfestival. This is an open air location with a terrace and a platform where art- and culture activities will take place. Out of the three parks (also called the ‘bleken’), Stroinksbleek is the middle park. In this cultural park the industrial heritage determines the atmosphere of the location with the Rozendaal, TwentseWelle museum, 21rozendaal, studio’s and apartments situated in the south. The Tetem building, another remainder of the Enschede textile history, is situated in the north. The design of the Stroinksbleek has been made in respect to the industrial buildings and the diversity of the users of the park. The water of the Roombeek brook is emphatically present facing the Stroinksbleek. A beautiful pond has been made with raised grass plains surrounding it. A platform just above the pond will be used as stage for cultural and musical performances.
BalengebouwThe history of the Balenbuilding goes back to the fifties when the building was taken in use as a storage place for cotton bags. The Balenbuilding was part of the N.V. cotton mill Bamshoeve which was situated at the Bamshoeve terrain since 1896. In 1962 the Bamshoeve merged with the Royal Dutch Textile Union; a collaboration that did not last. After the bankruptcy in 1973 the Bamshoeve resigned out of the RDTU and started a new collaboration with a number of other cotton mills. Unfortunately neither this collaboration was successful as a result of which the factory was forced to close its doors. After the closure the factory complex was taken over by artists and small businesses. During the fireworks disaster in 2000, most of the factory was burned down after which it was preserved as a monument. In 2005 the Balenbuilding was the first location to be used in the Free Spaces Plan. It also served as the main location of the annual art and culture festival the Balenfestival. In the future, the Balenbuilding will be the location of the new Cremer museum. The ground floor and the first floor of the Balenbuilding were used as a Free Space for cultural and artistic activities until the summer of 2008. Since then the building has made room for the renovation and construction of the Cremer museum and will no longer be used as a Free Space location.
